Affordable Health Insurance

What is a family to do when one spouse works and the other stays at home and they have no insurance? Or maybe your job does offer insurance but it isn’t affordable health insurance? Many jobs offer Affordable Health Plans, but only if you’re full-time and you’ve been with the company for at least 90 days. If you are part-time with the company, they won’t even offer coverage until you’ve been with them for a year and even then, it may be a limited amount of coverage.

So what options does a person have to find good health insurance for themselves and their family? One option might be to turn to the private health insurance (PHI) sector. Although the company you work for may offer coverage, you might be paying an arm and a leg for your family. It isn’t unheard of to decline your companies offer for coverage and find your own.  Now don’t go and cancel your insurance immediately, do your research. Look around at different companies and get a few different health insurance quotes.

There are a few different things to consider before you decide to go for private health insurance. While you may save a lot of money through the private sector, you’ll want to make sure that you’re getting the coverage you need. Usually with group coverage through work you get coverage over many different things, but you may also be paying for services you will never need. Through PHI you’ll have a little more flexibility.

You may also consider if you or any of your family members have any pre-existing conditions. Some PHI companies do cover pre-existing conditions and some do not. As group coverage is required to cover all family members, you may need to keep your group health insurance for that purpose. You may be able to keep your insurance and the member with the pre-existing condition on your insurance and find affordable health insurance for your other family members.

If ever you find yourself without a job or your company’s benefits do not begin for a certain amount of time or your job is temporary, private health insurance might be the way to go. When you own your own policy, it goes wherever you go. The policy belongs to you and does not end upon termination. One last point to emphasize, do not cancel your group insurance until you have your own private policy in place. You do not want to leave yourself with a window where you are not covered just in case the unexpected happens!
